Sequential numbering of pics

Hoping some one can help me out. In my last camera (Nikon 4500) the picture numbers in the camera carried on from one download to the computer to the next. With the D80 every time I download to the computer and delete the pics off the camera the pic numbers go back to 0 - I have turned the sequential numbering on in the camera settings but this has not helped - any ideas??

If it is like both my D70 and D300, there are two (well three, but we'll ignore the third) options for File Number Sequence: On and Off. With "On", it remembers the last photograph taken and increments the File Number Sequence even between cards. With off, it only adds one to the last one on the card and will reset to 0001 when you format the card.

Look up File Number Sequence (or File No. Seq.) in the manual.
