I have seen this occur on the nikkor 17-55 a few times in the 12 months that I have owned this lens, any ideas on how to aviod it..? anyone else have similar problems?

There was no filters on for this shot.

Hi gerry, reviews for the 17-55 often point out that its prone to lens flare. So its not just you.

No idea on how to fix it though.

Not that I think it would have solved the problem but, were you using a lens hood?

I took some night shots with a 50 1.4 once, and had a uv filter attached. A bright part towards the middle of the picture was reflected upside down.

I had never had any issues using this lens in the daytime (with or without filters)...
I have since taken night photos with the same lens (no filter attached this time) and not had the issues, so would definitely agree that the filter does cause issues (esp at night)

Except - as said there was no filter on at the time.

It looks like the flare is from the lights on the bridge, so I don't think there is much you could have done to avoid it short of using a lens that doesn't flare as much. Given the light sources are in the frame, I don't see that you can stop the lens bouncing that light around if that's what it's prone to do.

What if you opened the aperture up Gerry? Would it be more blurry so that the flare is less noticable?

I wonder if it's the anti-flare coating on the lens.

I will remember that for next time..I typically wander around the f8 mark, however will try it out..
