A new look

Postby gstark on Sat Jan 12, 2008 5:19 am

It's been a long day ...

And night.

Welcome to phpBB version 3!

The basic conversion took less time than I expected, but the indexing of the words for the search facility took longer.

I still have some basic tweaking to do, and there's a couple of things that are not working as they're supposed to be right now, so I need to also look at those aspects and see what is happening. Please have a look at the styles; I think you'll like what Leigh has done there. We still need to tidy up some graphics, such as the basic DSLRUsers.com logo.

The ordering system has changed too: the basic pricelist is similar, but as you place your orders, you will now see a list of your outstanding orders on your bargain page. Click on the order number to see the details, and put through your payment advices. As before, orders are not processed (sent to Poon) unless and until you do your payment advice.

And suggestions? As always, they're welcome.

Please post your comments, and any issues that you see, in this thread.

Hmmm... nice clean changeover. Very good.

I don't know if I like the new style yet (the logo needs a tweak btw :) ) but I daresay it'll grow on me. I've not used phpbb3 before so it's all pretty unfamiliar.

Nice work guys... I actually like the new look.

Are we still going to get the list of the last 20 or so threads? or do we need to go into each section seperatly?

Cheers guys,

ignore my previous question, I worked out if you click on the Portal link it takes you to the new home page (when I first logged in I went to a different home page!!!)

They say a change is as good as a holiday, so right now I must be on holiday :) I go away for a day and come back to find this.

It's like backyard blitz but online. :)

Awesome stuff fellas. I can only imagine how much work you have put into building this new site. I hope it is easier to manage for you than the other one.

Thanks a lot for making this place such a great place to visit on the internet.

Is it just me being stubborn or just that I'm used to the old one, is there a way to place the avatar pics to the LEFT side of each post? So its easier and more natural to identify who is the poster.

Try changing theme, from your user control panel. Only the default one has the avatar on the right, which I agree seems very weird! I like the Nikon Glass theme but I'm not sure if it feels a bit too much like Nikonians? :)

Edit: hmm, seems BBCode doesn't work yet?

I don't know if this is a conversion issue or I just had info in the wrong place but my email address had been converted into the msn messenger address field.
Not that this is going to cause any issues just might be a mistake.

Except for the portal page, yes, that's my feeling too. I think that the database has a better design, which would help.

olrac wrote:I don't know if this is a conversion issue or I just had info in the wrong place but my email address had been converted into the msn messenger address field

Carlo, thanx. I'll go and have a look at your data in both the old, and the new versions of the database, and let you know what I see. Probably by PM. :)

All, thanx for your comments and support. For those who are uncomfortable with the poster details on the right, try going into your control panel and changing to one of the other themes. I will probably change the default theme later today anyway. Please keep your comments and observations coming.

There's a series of buttons immediately above the message posting area - B (bold), i (italics) etc. smilies are, in the current default skin, immediately to the right of the message posting area.

I'm using "DSLR Users - Nikon Glass" and there are no smilies or text helpers.

Another anomaly, but not a huge one is that links don't open in a new window automatically with a left click. Most of the time I right-click and open in new tab anyway, but I guess not everyone does. They might now :)

In the old database, you had both of these fields entered, and they were each set to the same value, that being what you had in your email address field. They have each been just copied across as is.

Cheers.

Steve,

You're talking about links embedded within a post I presume? My recollection is that they would mostly open in a new tab, and I'm understanding that you're confirming this for the old version of the code, but not for the new?

I don't know of I can do much about it, but I will see.

Thank you.

For those who haven't yet noticed, I have set the number of posts per page to 50.

Please let me know if that's too many, or not enough, or ..... I think that was one request that had been held over until we implemented the conversion.

One more thing the emails for topic relies are coming from your redbacksweb.com address.

As I said, very strange: I have six checkboxes, one of which is a moderator one. The others should, I think, be generally available. Let me see what happens in a few minutes from my alternate logins.

And another weird thing, I did a preview on the above, but I got this...

http://andrewtrevor-jones.com/dslrusersposting2.jpg

This one is expected behaviour. Sort of. :)

Look at the very top of this one, at the system message that's been posted. When somebody makes a post to the thread that you're currently posting to, but their post is made after you start your post, but before you submit it, phpbb3 warns you of this in this manner, and gives you a chance to change what you have said.

I personally don't care for this behaviour, but I've not seen any way in the configuration to turn this off. I suspect I may need to make some code changes for this.

How many checkboxes below the text entry area do you see?

In this section of the forum?

And in perhaps one of the general sections of the forum?

Could you please post an image of what you're seeing?

I've just made a change in the forum/group permissions which may address this issue.

The permissions matrix in phpBB3 is quite complex, and it's going to take more than a few days before we get this nailed down, I suspect.

Please let me know if what I have just done fixes anybody's issues.

How many checkboxes below the text entry area do you see?

In this section of the forum?

And in perhaps one of the general sections of the forum?

I only had two checkboxes but now it's got 4, and bbcode is now working.. Not sure what you did but it seems okay now.

"Remember me" still doesn't work though.. I have to keep logging in. My cookies seem to be okay as it's saving the style cookie fine. My passwords are also saving fine. The only thing happening is that when I first hit the site, I have to hit the login button to get in.

I was just about to post a screen shot, but I can now see the smileys on the left so there's probably no need.
As Gleff said, I still have to log in every time.

I do like the online status message on the member's avatar.
