POTW 31 May, 2011...Guest Selector

Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Please note that this is "Picture of the Week"; do not confuse that with "best picture of the week", which is a concept of which we have no understanding.

POTW 31 May, 2011...Guest Selector

On behalf of the DSLRUsers.com Team I would like to thank Mr Darcy (Greg) for his contribution this week.

I went through all the images the last few days, and got down to a short list of three images. Then I went away and thought about it. All the images were very different, and each appealed to me for different reasons. Still while driving back from Sydney, I realised there was really only one choice.

But first the runners up:
Gerry's rework of his Bombo shoot. I usually do not like HDR treatments, but this one is so over the top, I started to like it for a whole set of different reasons. It could easily be a large acrylic painting or the set of a Sci-Fi movie. the fact that I know the spot, but barely recognise it in this treatment only heightens the appeal

Image

Next in line is from the latest installment of Rodney's street visions. I have been away for much of these, but have avidly been following them whenever network connection allowed. This one appeals on many levels. Not least because it is the type of photo that I love to take, but rarely pull off. The leading lines, the focus on detail that one would normally walk by. The light. The gradation of tones. The repetition of geometry. I just keep coming back.

Image

Finally, Sylvia's portrait of a horse wins me over. On one level is is just a too tightly cropped, partly obscured headshot of an animal. But wait. One eye is perfectly focused and framed, looking at me. Waiting. Trusting. Patient. The other is veiled. It brings to mind the dance of the seven veils. Inviting. Tempting. Sultry. The coat is gleaming, clearly well cared for. The crop shows enough, but at the same time leaves me wanting more. There is love here. It goes both ways, and it shows in this superb portrait.

Wow,
I am kind of speechless.
Thank you for the kind words and compliments. She has a memorising stare but a very kind eye.
For a bit of background on the horse, and for anyone interested. She is a lovely filly. I imported her and her mum roughly 2 years ago from Germany. She has a very established pedigree in dressage which is why I purchased her. She was about 18mths old when I caught her eye in this shot in our house paddock. Her paddock name is "GG".
She is out at Tamworth right now being backed (that's industry speak for "broken in")

She will be home in 5 weeks when we will know what we have. So far so good.

Thanks again fozzie.

It's great to see a newer member take out this award. Congrats Sylvia, and it sure is a beautiful animal portrait.

Thanks to Greg for doing such a good job as guest selector too.
