Need a Wide Angle Lens

Postby darreng on Thu May 12, 2011 3:07 pm

I mainly do landscape and environmental portraits. I am in serious need of of a sharp wide angle lens. I currently use a Canon 550D with EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS and 50mm 1.8.

From what I have read it comes down to...

Tokina AT-X 11-16mm f/2.8 DX
Canon EF-S 10-22
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM (Canon Mount)
Canon 17-40mm

To fill in the void of a wide sharp lens. Opinions?

Of course, I am also open to other suggestions if there are better options than the four I mentioned.

The Canon 17-40 is very highly regarded however it's probably too narrow for a crop sensor camera (great on full frame). If you only wanted to go down to 17mm you could consider the Tamron 17-50/2.8 non-VC (which I and a few others on here also use for some landscapes/seascapes).

Gerry has the Tokina 11-16 and I believe he really thinks highly of it.

I have the Sigma 8-16mm (which you havn't listed) and is REALLY wide and still very sharp and controls CA and other aberations very well - it's apparently newer (technology wise) and better than the older 10-20 (which I've also used). I think the only downside of the 8-16 is that it has a bulbous front element (like the revered Nikon 14-24) and thus can't really take filters - although I do plan on trying handholding my Lee GND sometime to see if that works well (it should).

I'm personally leaning between...

Tokina AT-X 11-16mm f/2.8 DX
Canon EF-S 10-22

Price isn't an option, but it is always a consideration.

Tokina AT-X DX 11-16mm F/2.8
Tokina AT-X DX 12-24mm F/4

Then dead heat between:
Canon EF-S 10-22mm
Tamron SP 10-24mm

I've only owned/used the 10-22 from your list. It is an incredible lens. Sharp, beautifully built and fun to use. Thoroughly recommended.

:agree:

I have this lens and the only showstopper is the limited range, if you can live with that then I reckon it pretty well smashes most others

I recommend trying a few of them for a couple of days, wide angles are a different ball game and its a good idea to try out a few before committing

Upon looking at other sites and comparisons it seems that most seem to suggest that the Tokina is a better lens but the Canon has the better glass. This makes little sense.

This confuses me.....how can one have be the better lens, but the other have better glass?

The Tokina is a really nice lens, the 10-22mm is a bit overrated in my opinion, but the two are about as expensive as each other on the Aust market. I know which one I would get

I'm guessing by this you mean the Tokina 11-16, however, you haven't mentioned why this would be your choice.

Ignore the price comparison as that is of no concern to me.

It's fast (constant f/2.8 ), well built, and most importantly SHARP, even into the corners. I have used a few copies of this lens, in both Canon and Nikon mount and I have never been underwhelmed by it. The Canon is good, and is a bit wider, but I dont see the worth in getting the Canon for the brand when the brighter Tokina is available.

Just a bit of housekeeping, please pay attention to the PINK highlighted section at the top of the page and place a meaningful location into your profile.

It's better getting it from me than from someone else
