D300S Not (yet) announced.

Here's a link to a story we covered on Sunday last, on our Gadget Grill radio show.

The next model of the D300 looks likely to support video - with an external microphone jack! - SD cards (additional to CF) and quite a bit more.

Sounds interesting, been mulling over an upgrade from my D80 for a while now.

I was thinking about a D700 but the cost of the grey D300's are more attractive (and a D700 is way overkill for an enthusiast like me. Come to think of is so is a D300/s :D )

Would we expect these to come out at the same price as D300?

It would be nice to see the D700 version appear, on the hope that it would push the price of the D700 down a little (or a lot). Can't wait for the full-frame goodness (on digital).

Can I hope for a firmware upgrade that will give me the extra menu features (improved histograms etc)??? A D300s will be nice, but I think a lot of people are waiting on a D400 before committing to buying a new body....I wonder if a D300s will be enough for these people.

Ditto about a D700s....would love to go to full frame goodness (starts thinking about flogging off D300 in anticipation...maybe not)

Cameron, Has your wishlist expanded since the Vivid meet?? Did you add the IR DSLR ? :)

:ot: I know I will get biased views [such is life] but it would appear that Nikon is winning the camera race at the moment with the exeption of better pricing on the 5DMk2 and perhaps better constant aperture f4 lenses?

Nope the IR DSLR was on the wishlist before the meet, it actually lost the D60-sized FX Fuji (cause it is not going to happen soon).

The camera race? Hmmmm well it appears that the two manufacturers are pretty tight, the 50D helps to close the gap on the D300 (some will argue this, I dont think so) the 500D is close to the D5000, the 5D II helps to take on the D700/D3x but is not a direct competitor to either (IMHO it is a Sony A900 (D700x if/when it comes) competitor more than anything else), so you are left with the D90 (50D competes??). Overall it appears that there is a digression (which I think is getting wider) between the aims of the manufacturers, Nikon looks to be producing 12MP with increasing image quality, whereas Canon is looking to up the MP (going to 15MP) whilst maintaining image quality. F/4 lenses simply dont exist for Nikon users....it is not a case of 'better'

nikonrumors are building a pretty good reputation for themselves for very accurate rumors very early on. this has been rumored for well over a month now.

as for the camera, a pretty uninspiring offer from nikon imo. its really just a d300 with video. perhaps a sign of the times that adding video was a catch up from nikon but real innovation and improvement is on hold in the GFC.

video is something that really appeals to me and i was planning on holding off on my next dslr until video came about, (d700s/d800), but after using the MkII and d5000, i realised that real useable implementation of video on dslr is at least 2 or 3 generations away so i bit the bullet with the d700 instead. i'll wait a couple of years now until they get video right with a proper hi res flip screen and most importantly decent AF.

Congrats on the D700 purchase. I agree with the need for decent AF in video mode, flip screen and a decent output format.

I am hoping that the real innovation is being held back (I dont want to crave/lust for the next innovation), but I guess some people are really waiting for the next generation of bodies before upgrading/buying.

thanks cam. the weather and time hasn't let me really use it much, (only got it yesterday mind you !), but i've used it alongside a MkII for the last 2 months so i knew what i was getting. the good and the "not so good". tis a wonderful body but it has its own little frustrations...you cant have everything i suppose !! lol

Wow that's a luxury that most don't even dream about! It's like the shareware concept for hardware!

Some of your may of seen this already, as it's canon I hadn't, but I'm super impressed by it. All filmed using Canon DSLR, and some pretty damn sweet lenses too (and someone has some spare cash too, for the chopper and everything else, I'm assuming Canon helped subsidise it). http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller ... id=C125886

Thanks Gary, looks like you and Leigh have fun on that show.

Not sure about the electric pants discussion

For me, I'll keep my money for the new D700x or D400, or maybe I'll just keep my money while I still have a few PP left.

Cheers,

André

Fun would be the operative word. :)

He have a basic running sheet for the show, but that just reminds us of the baseline topics heaers that we have. News items are decided as we go to air, as is most of the rest of the show.

Being live (usually) almost anything can, and often does, happen. :)

D300s seems interesting though I don't think current D300 users will get too excited to upgrade to. It's not as evolutionary as the 5D to 5DmkII I believe.

Personally I'm holding out for a D700 or D700x!
