Raskills First D700 Image

With everyone getting new bodies, I think that separate section for you to proudly display your first image from your new acquisition is in order.

This applies to brand new bodies, as well as bodies that are simply newly acquired by you.

Raskills First D700 Image

Postby Raskill on Tue Oct 28, 2008 8:27 pm

Well, after Indy, and being exposed (somewhat intentionally) to D3's and D700's by the good folk at NPS, I decided to jump in and purchase one. I was swinging in the breeze whether to buy the D3 or the D700, so I asked the NPS rep to sell me one over the other.

He stated that the major differences were the weather sealing (D3 over D700 with grip), the shutter life (D3 rated to 300,000, D700 150,000) and the frame rate. So, with that in mind, and the $2000 difference I went for the D700. I nursed her all day until I got to my friends house, where I fixed a lens and took the first shot.

Firstly, why did I choose that place? Because I find it the most relaxing place I know, looking over the dam next to the deck of my friends house, listening to the tropical birds.... Most relaxing!

So, here is my first image with the D700:

...and for the record, the differences between the two cams according to DPReview:

Smaller, lighter body *
Built-in iTTL flash (G.No 17 / ISO 200)
No rear information panel (new info display on main LCD)
D700 doesn't have the D3's 5:4 aspect ratio option
95% coverage, 0.72x viewfinder (D3: 100% / 0.7x)
Focus screen DX mode now indicated with a rectangle rather than shaded area
Lower burst rate (5.0 fps / 8.0 fps with optional MB-D10)
100 frames maximum in continuous shooting mode
Smaller battery (EN-EL3e)
Optional battery grip (MB-D10, same as D300)
Expanded Function button options (can assign any camera menu item)
Live View can be assigned to FUNC, AE-L or Preview buttons (allowing LV + different drive modes)
Virtual Horizon can be overlaid on Live View preview image
Different shutter (150,000 cycle rating - same as D300)
Image Sensor cleaning ('sensor shake' dust reduction)
Single CF slot (D3 has two)
Minor menu and control differences (control layout is almost identical to D300)

Cheers folks, I'm looking forward to getting it trackside, thats for sure.

Oh, and for anyone thinking of buying one, I got an email from Teds Cameras today saying Nikon has stated 'substantial' increases in Nikon bodies will occur from the 1st November.

looking forward to you getting trackside aswell ! btw: substantial increase in nikon body sales ? i find that highly unlikely given the state of the aussie dollar, the cashbacks/ redemptions or whatever they are hinting at would have to be HUGE.

The price for Poon is up at $5200, I paid $3600.... The increases will be caused by the poor state of our dollar, making wholesale costs increase I guess. :?

couple of theories -

a) price increases are somewhat inevitable. Our FX rate against the US lowest in 5 years

Timing will depend on two factors

1/ stock on hand

2/ how keen Nikon/Canon are to stick the boot into the grey importers who are already locked into POON type price increases

Sorry, but I have to say you have made a very, very poor choice: Beer infused with lemon & lime? What were you thinking? Real men drink water infused with yeast fermented sugars and hops! :D :D

I think the "SE" part is redundant. :D Besides, I thought they all drank XXXX Gold up there?

From ECS. good news.

Great news for us legit dealers, as Nikon Australia (bless'em) today advised that they will be holding their pricing till January 2009.

Nah, I think the 'lost' focal length is ok, as the extra MP allow for cropping anyway.

Or maybe, I need to now buy a 200-400.......
