The photo that convinced me to buy a DSLR

With everyone getting new bodies, I think that separate section for you to proudly display your first image from your new acquisition is in order.

This applies to brand new bodies, as well as bodies that are simply newly acquired by you.

The photo that convinced me to buy a DSLR

Postby odysseus on Sun Dec 21, 2008 9:13 pm

I took this with a friend's Canon EOS 40 when I was thinking about buying a DSLR. I'm sure it's not the best photo in the world (I know nothing about anything in terms of technique) but after seeing this I was sold.

It's of my son.

(Note: minor tweaks to contrast and sharpness done with Picasa .. hi-tech, I know  )

Nikon D40x and kit 18-55mm .. now in use. With a freakin' charger. And a spare freakin' battery.

Are you laughin' at me? Do you find me amusing??

Ah, at last! Excellent! And thank you for your kind comment. BTW if it's not too off-topic, what does all the verbiage in your sig mean?

I see it too!

Nice shot.

Don't think though, that you will get light like this every time you pick up a DSLR. One can only wish..... :)

Cheers

Yeah, it was overcast so the light was pretty diffuse. Which seems to be a good thing.

Yes, the lighting is superb. It may be more accurate to say "The photo that convinced me to increase overcast days". :P

Hey it's your thread, you can take it as far off topic as you like. :)

Rather than engage in a pissing contest along the lines of "I've got more camera gear than you" I chose to list SOME of my woodwork gear, specifically my favourite planes. I have more planes, and of course other tools, but hey we all have to stop somewhere. :D
The planes in my sig (and a few more !) are in this photo:

Image

The Stanley #6 is near the back in the middle. The Lie Nielsen #4 is third from the front left. 60.5 is the brass/black one nearest the front to the right. The 151 is balanced between two others near the back (one is the #6)

(And yes all you other pedants out there, I know the 151 is a spokeshave rather than a plane :P )

Stanley introduced the numbering system back in the late 1800's. It is still used by all manufacturers of metal planes today. New Stanley planes are not worth the carton they come in. If you want one, get an old one (My oldest Stanley was made in 1902, my newest in 1970 - it took me 6 months to turn it from crap to worthwhile), or buy a Leigh Nielsen. They are better than the best Stanley ever made.

I love it! That photo should be on the cover of 'Plane Fancier's Monthly' someday--possibly introducing a 15-plane group test. :)

It's getting harder (pun intended), but don't forget I have a whole National Park full of trees on my doorstep

(I think we should hand the thread back to OP now)

I was starting to think I had accidentally hijacked my own thread there for a bit .. but I sent myself a sharply worded PM and I will comply with board regulations from now on.

So, back to the photography ..
Nikon D40x and kit 18-55mm .. now in use. With a freakin' charger. And a spare freakin' battery.
