Indoor shoots with ambiance lighting

hi guys!

what setting do you guys use for indoor shots with tungsten lighting, ballroom, etc.?

tried 1/30 shutter speed ISO 640, f5.6-f6.3, with SB-800 with diffuser dome tilted, -2/3ev AA mode ( i think), used kit lens, so far the photos are ok, but are there any work around for this?

saw some photographers shooting with their flash pointed directly on their subjects (group and solo shots), any tips on this?

why not use your 50/1.8?

Take off the diffusion dome, change -2/3 to no flash comp. Dial camera to manual mode, alter the aperture until you get the right mix of ambient vs flash light. If you find yourself wide open and in need of more ambient, drop your shutter speed.

Depends what's wrong with your pictures and what you're trying to correct/achieve.

thanks for the tips, will try that out, just another question, if i use lets say my 50mm at f1.8 or f2.8, will i be able to capture the ambient lighting at 1/60? or is there a rule of thumb to set shutterspeed at 1/30 to capture ambient lighting? Noticed my photos have dark background with fast shutter.

Yes, Agree with onyx, its about getting the right ratio of flash to ambient..

Go to manual mode... The flash only lasts for 1/500 so anything past that is exposing the background so it becomes a trade off between getting a better exposed background and getting "ghosts" ie exposed people on top of your flash exposure...

here is an example from a wedding I shot:

the flash has frozen most of the action but there is some motion blurring round the flashed figures...

thanks for the EXIF data! did you use +2 exposure compensation for all the shots, and 1/10 that night? or is it on a trial and error basis? i'm sorry for the newbie type of questions
