Picture of the Week 14.06.05This weeks Picture of the Week is by Kipper (Darryl) a great example of a bird in a natural setting. Whilst I think the shot may be a tad oversharpened, when I first saw it I was struck by what a great pose and composition there was. I believe this is a reflection of either good luck and timing, or more realistically the time Darryl has put into photographing our feathered friends. Put it on the cover of your book Darryl

Thanks Glen, and thanks for the potw. I didn't realise it was oversharpened until you told me as this was one of the shots that I postprocessed when I got home after being out in the bush for 12hours. Probably a bad idea to do that The other shots that I'm sharpening I'm checking for halos around the edges of the subjet and removing them using the clone tool. It takes a bit of time, but seems to work quite well as you still get the sharpness in details such as feathers and the eyes.

Congratulations Darryl. A worthy choice. This is a very striking image because of the simplicity of the framing as much as the subject matter itself.

Congrats on the POTW, Darryl! I haven't seen this photo before, but it is certainly a good one.

Great shot Darryl. Our Melbourne ornithographers are a formidable bunch, and Darryl has excellent skills, clearly demonstrated by this shot.
Fine work, and a great choice from Glen. Greg - - - - D200 etc

Could it be that Darryl already had this in mind???? There's an interesting amount of space left above the Kite's head that would leave plenty of room for the title and byline. "Feathers in Focus" - The Avian Images of Kipper Simon

Hah Norm, while the raptors at times are easily snapped with the 70-200VR. The Whistling Kite and Brown Falcon are very timid when perched. The Brown Falcon more so. So I still need that reach. Also the small birds like the chats, swallows and cisticolas really could do with reach to fill the frame.
