Usually I leave my "natural history" images untouched, but figured I'd experiment with cleaning up the background:

either all or none With all the penguins in there gives it more context, removing all *might* isolate the main subject some more. However I found when looking at both images i barely noticed the missing penguins since i was drawn more to the main subject in both - thats me though....I would also consider looking at a tighter crop to give more emphasis on the penguin. hth.

Side note for the linux geeks amoung us...

that just conjured up a whole lot of strange images for me just then...trying to associate compiling with a real life penguin

I would further suggest keeping/adding OOF pengos to the last photo (two of them) to make the whole picture sort of Y shaped... it would be nice if the OOF ones could walk obliquely towards the main subject.

This is a tough call. The basic image is sound, as you know, but I agree that it feels unfinished in some way, but not in any way that one readily put one's finger on.

Rather than cloning, why not try cropping? It seems to me that you might be able to crop from each side and the top to achieve a similar goal of removing those extraneous elements, but I'm not sure that this would addres the fundamental issue of "unsatisfaction" that I'm getting from the basic image.
