I'm no pro so not sure if my advice will be any good to you  
 
The photo could be a lot brighter and a bit sharper.  Do you shoot in RAW or jpeg?  Either way, try using unsharp mask in Nikon Capture or Photoshop to sharpen the images a bit.
Increase the saturation a bit as well as it will bring out the colours in the image a bit more.  
For me personally, the best way to learn about metering and getting the correct exposure was to use manual 
mode and fudge (like my technical term? 

) around with the shutter speed and aperture settings.
You have a lot of potential as I can see from the other photos you've posted.  Keep learning and experimenting with the D70
