The narrow confines in between each apartment block are the laneways where the locals travel to and from work.


The narrow confines also house workers maintaining the apartment blocks.

In the first there's just no details at the side so it was hard to see what the image was.

I do like the second however - there's enough detail in the walls with the reflections and what not to see that it is indeed a very narrow lane with overhanging buildings.

I'd like to see more shadow detail in each of these.

I like them with the darkness, really brings out the fact that these are tight, dark areas betwen buildings.

In fact, in the first I would clone out that section of light on the left hand side - it looks out of place.

Thanks for the feedback. Personally I preferred the darker sides to help isolate the subject in the middle, so the user would focus more in that area. I did try versions where there was more detail brought out on the side. Will post these when I'm back.

I would like to seem more, possibly with a slightly longer focal length as well so the empty spaces are not as expansive....Very interesting images though

Here's a rework of the first one based on the suggestions to give more detail in the shadows. I've also cropped it slightly to try and make it symmetrical. Admittedly I was reluctant to try this as I my initial primary intent was to emphasise both the scale of the buildings compared to the person, as well as how narrow the laneway was. I didn't want to lose this too much by bringing up the details around the side.

I much prefer this rework. You've added more depth and scale through including the shadow detail, and as a result, I think you've enhanced your stated goal, rather than reducing it.

For me, giving that bit more detail has made a world of difference. It hasn't taken away the message you were trying to convey, quite like it now.

Thanks - I prefer the slight detail as well - just enough to tell there's something there but not too much to be distracting from the centre of the image. This was much better than having vast areas of plain black where you couldn't tell what it was.

Hhhmmmm. You've got something very interesting here. The composition is to die for! I love the compexity of it all. And B&W suits the subject. Very nice work!

I think I prefer the secons submission with
more detail. It makes it more interesting.

I prefer the original image. I find my eye floating around the reworked image, whereas with the original I'm drawn instantly to the subject. There's enough detail to understand the surroundings, and the dark edges increase the sense of isolation. I would clone out the bright spot though.

An excellent capture in either case.
