We've been getting lots of snow so I went up on Saturday and sure enough, found some great photo ops.
When I first opened the pic the sky was completely white. As I played in Raw the cloud on the right magically appeared. There's no way I could have saved that in JPEG.
THis is shot with Kit Lens.
Converted to BW with adj layers:
channel mixer
hue saturation
I also added a curves layer to add tone and texture to the snow and then brushed over the rocks as it made them a little too dark. I don't really know what I'm doing but my brother walked in while I was working on it and gave me a quick lesson in layers so I worked on them for a little while. Do you think I overdid it?
I toyed with the idea of cloning out the skiers at the bottom, but decided to leave them in as my reasoning wasn't quite strong enough (thought just the sign of humans conspicuously absent might be compelling. Comments and critique as always are indeed welcom.
EDIT(I edited this on the darker of the two monitors, the apple LCD seems a little bright for me, although I don't really know which one is the most accurate. It makes a big diff on this photo. Last edited by dooda on Mon Apr 04, 2005 6:50 pm, edited 1 time in total.

This is magnificent, dooda! Love the rocks on the left balanced with the ski trails on the right, and I really think the people should stay. I suppose it gives some sort of perspective.
I couldn't tell you anything about the PP, but I love it in B&W! Just stunning!

It must the monitor I'm viewing, but the B&W looks muddy. i would preferred a portrait compo to emphasize borders/skiers track down the slope

Nice image but there is only one thing wrong with it....
Those bloody skiers at the bottom!!!! Now replace them with Boarders and you will have a perfect image

Great image & great PP work AND a strong example of the benefits of shooting in the Raw (although it's no doubt a little on the chilly side ). The skiers DEFINITELY aid the shot since, as has already been said, they give it scale.
I've never seen snow in the flesh so I don't have SDS

Wow, thankyou for all of the kind remarks. Woody, don't worry, that was me about 5 minutes later.
The uploaded version's contrast didn't come out quite as vivid for some reason, still trying to figure that one out.
I appreciate the comments on the skiers as well as I was strongly considering cloning them out. I feel so blessed to live so close to such scenery.

Dooda...........this is just such an awesome image. I love It!
Now please pardon my spelling but is it a shot of the "sedan couare" on Blackcomb? I spent a season there many years ago. I must admit it seems a little flat where the skiers are standing so I'm not sure but it brings back memories.
Brilliant image anyway!

Marcus - Yes it is BLCMB, I believe off the Jersey Cream Chair but I don't honestly know the name (I suck at knowing the names of this place).

Nice picture Dooda. Powder looks sweet. I love how you can tell the mountain is huge using those people to help scale it.

I like the patterns on the snow. Very nice contrast to the rough edges of the rocks. Very nice indeed.

Thanks for the comments. I must say I knew that there was going to be some jealousy from a few of the members (Darb Woody and Rahudman) among others. One day I want to get to New Zealand. I hear it rivals WB and The Selkirks in BC. Again, I'm VERY greatful and humbled that I can capture the magnificence of this part of the world and share it.
