Just wanted to say a huge thanx to Glen for organising this meet. Bel and I had a great time, good to meet some new people from the forum and share our passions, use some great lenses and enjoy some food and some odd company (two girls who were rather philosophical at the pub). Here are just a few shots that I took.







The crowd of photogs snapping away at the model for the night, nikkofans niece. Notice how it looks like Chi's head is being consumed by the mouth of Luna Park..hehe.



The model, who was VERY patient with us all snapping at her with our SB-800's, I fear she will not return to a meet again..hehe.



I know the horizon isn't straight...





Mr Luna keeping an eye on us, a bit noisey but maybe a bit 'arty'?

Prefer the first SOH shot, the second is a bit too blown for my tastes

Geoff, great shots especially the one of all the photogs shooting away Like all of them a lot except the last overblown OH one.

The two girls at the pub were a treat, straight out of Jerry Springer, couldn't have organised such interesting company if we tried.

Thanx Scott. Yeah..got a few of that pylon, the water is the propulsion of water from a ferry and the wharf, I liked the effect too. I agree the 2nd shot of the SOH is a bit over exposed...The model shot is perhaps a bit dark, could have boosted up the SB-800 but I'm sure she was temporarily blinded for a while!!

Nothing wrong with the model shot - much better than any I was able to get! I gotta do some more homework on using the flash me thinks

I like your 2nd picture the best, nice colours on the wooden post plus the almost fog like swirls of the water.

Indeed it was a top night Paul! I don't think that was/is a bunny, more like a star I think. Your company was excellent, I will long remember that ditzy girl at the pub questioning us all on the values of love and life...too indepth for a Sunday night!

Geoff, these are fantastic as well, some loverly shots and all had a good time and it's good to have somewhere like this to go take pics of.

Wow, what kind of lens did you use, i like how the image is muted not overexposed, or colour biased, it has an elegant quality to it

I think we all missed the Perfect 'Decisive Moment' shot at the pub
but now i know what kind of shot is needed to win the comp!

The photos are fantastic! But I can tell you that my niece, who was indeed a very patient model, says she's mortified that she's now on the internet as we've just seen your photos. But I think I might be able to drag her along to another shoot (as I think she's actually secretly pleased but won't admit it)

Glen, thanks for organising this. It was a good night and thanks to everyone who so patiently answered questions and problem-solved for me last night - well, except for Glen who insulted my "very ordinary" tripod (and rightly so, because it is), So, if my photos don't turn out ... it's because of my tripod? . Well, at least now I have an excuse for a better one!

Wendell, any of your light painting images ready to post? They looked really interesting.



ps Wendell, the shot you like was shot with the kit lens 18-70DX at 70mm at F8 for 8 seconds

I call it light grafitti or Poetry of Light
in the U.S. grafitti artists have been doing it since the 80's with multi coloured glowsticks and christmas lights, but i think the technique goes way back

Leigh will be posting he took the shots, I scribbled

Interesting image Wendell. Lyn, I think Charissa was the star with half a dozen photogs taking her photo, looked like a model shoot.


Nikkofan, bring Charissa along for a portrait shoot, with half a dozen photogs she should get a few good shots to take back to NZ. Would be good practise for everyone. I admire her ability to stand still (well more still than your tripod ).

Wendell, as if I could make her do anything! She is a very independent 21 year old - and an absolute darling as well! (but I'm her biased auntie here). How did the portrait shots turn out? I'm sure if you post some good ones, Charissa will be telling folks back home (in NZ) to log in & have a look!

She says she'll come out with us again, so I wouldn't be surprised if you've got yourself a designated lightscriber there!

Nikkofan, tripod lust is alive and well! They call it Gitzo or Manfrotto round here. Worst thing is the prices, my head and legs cost more than most of my lenses

Scott - I was about 1.5secs too late..it was serious girl on girl action...should have seen Bel's eyes roll when I grabbed my camera..hahahaha!

As we've seen scenics from others, I thought I'd post a few that were a bit different.



ISO 200, f/10, 1/400s. Nikkor 80-200 at 200mm + Kenko 1.4x Teleplus 300DG.


ISO 200, f/11, 20 secs. 18-70DX at 24mm.

Glen walked the length of the lit path during the 20 second exposure, but only a ghostly double shadow is visible (just left of centre).

Love the 2nd shot inparticular Chi - very nicely done!

Chi, love the second one as well, even with the ghostly (ghastly) image

Some very nice pics there everybody! Sorry I couldn't be there. No decisive moments though...you'll all have to try harder!

Matt, the decisive moment was the lesbian kiss at the pub, we were all about 10 seconds too late Whilst getting relationship advice from a lady of dubious sobriety.

Some great shots there.. Wish I could have been there but I've been sick as a dog with a bacterial infection/flu or something.. Maybe next time.

Hope you're feeling better real soon and able to come to the next night time shoot!

A few quick comments from me:

Geoff - you're second shots is the star of a great bunch of pics. The simplicity of the shot and the swirl of mist around the post give it a nice etherial feel.

Glen I like your third shot best. The diffues glow on the opera house is just magic. Once day I'll get down to Sydney Town for a night shoot.

Chi. The second one of yours is great. I like the contrast between the solid foregriund and the variagated lights of the city. The curve leadin in through the images nicelt rounds out the composition.

Most of these shots were taken at a 30 second exposure, fstop 3.2 with the infinity setting on, white balance set to incandescent, then I moved the tripod around during quarter intervals - coolpix8700

30 second exposure, set the tripod on one subject, set
lense to infinity so focussing between distant objects(bidge) and closup objects(lunaFace)does not become an issue, white balance set to incandescent, to minimize the oversaturation of the dominating lightones in this case yellow/red, then run around like a headless chicken on a hotplate.......set the tripod down,point somewhere else like the bridge......wait......eureka NYE advertising.
