Live preview would be great for underwater - viewfinders can be a little small when you have a mask on.

I wonder if the live preview results in shutter lag like in P&S cameras.

The Fuji S5 has the live preview option too - 30 seconds max :)

They don't mention it in the press release (pdf) so I suspect not - it's the sort of thing that would really, really annoy the target market for this camera so 'forgetting" to mention it would generate a lot of bad press. Especially since it's the press they'd be annoying :)

High Speed Action sports...
medium speed action sports, where you might need to hedge your bets to get the "front page" shot... the moment might be over in 1-2 seconds.. you "potentially" increase your chance of walking away a winner by shooting more often in that space.. (I say potentially as other things could come into play.. like focus, etc).

Got it in one Craig. I know when I'm anticipating a sports shot with the D2h, you put it in Continuous High Speed drive, and set your focus and make sure you've got enough space on your CF card. Then aim, focus and mash that shutter :D

Other things do indeed come into making high FPS work as you allude to - it's one thing to simply make a mirror/shutter combo flip up and down that quickly... but getting that data from the sensor to the buffer is a challenge as well.

The one of the most important things to achieve high FPS is the viewfinder blackout and AF system - yes, sounds strange. The mirror needs to be down for the partially silvered AF mirror to be active, which then beams the image on to the AF sensors. So at 8FPS with a 70-80ms blackout, you've got 560-640ms per second blackout, and in that gap where the mirror is back down, you've got to sample and lock AF at least 8 times, and in the case of the now older tech D2H/s dump 32MP into the buffer and processing engine!

In the case of the VF blackout, it becomes really important for even higher FPS - otherwise your viewfinder is pretty much black and you can't even see what you're trying to shoot! (let alone the AF work correctly!)

The engineering is quite impressive that has gone into the new mk3 when you look at it. I still prefer the CAM2000 AF in the D2 series, but I can appreciate the Mk3 for some of it's technical milestones.

Never fear Nikon users, I'm sure they've got something coming, and when it does get here, it'll kick butt too.

The marketing is always greener on the other side :D

I really hope it has better noise control for higher isos.

I feel really let down by the high iso performance of both my d200 and d70s :(

I didn't catch much of what the French guy was saying (mark-trois = MK-III, yeah? :) ).... but is that 10fps in RAW?? I want to get out my calculator and work out how quickly you could blow a 4Gb or 8Gb card with that beast.

How long could it sustain 10fps of raw?

I think i read somewhere on a canon tech bulletin 30 or 50 frames??? :?

per http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-8736-8850, it's 30 RAW or 110 jpg large at compression level 8.

You know, if that were my camera, I'd be shooting rapid-fire for EVERYTHING. I'm talking still-life, macro, architectural... doesn't matter :D :D

Holy cow - what can you say about that shutter ?? Does it have predictive AF ? - 'cause surely no lense is going to keep up with AF at that frame rate.

The specs also mention 'AF micro-adjustment (fine adjustment of AF point of focus)' - does this mean you can dial out any potential Back Focus / Front Focus 'live' ? Awesome..

Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit - how long before that makes it down to the lesser bodies ? 2 years max I'd say..

Wow...

Through the in-camera menus you can recalibrate the focus for all lenses or for individual lens models. But it's a global adjustment (i.e. you can't adjust the wide and telephoto ends of a zoom separately).

First body to get it was the 400D (Canon tend to try out fancy features like this in the consumer bodies).

Goodbye Nikon.......i am getting one of these babies......Nikon have sat on thier arse and done NOTHING for to long......i am jumping ship (at considerable loss cost wise)

And i am doing it sooner rather than later as Nikon is going to be consigned to the Minoltas/sony/sigma/pentax mob (no offence to those camera users) therefore thier gear will be worth less.

They have dropped the ball bigtime and undone all the fine work they did with the D200 (which i love BTW)

Very sad :(

Dan, while I'm all for people jumping ship if they feel they need to, or for features they feel are being overlooked elsewhere...

I'm interested, what in particular aren't you getting from your D200, which makes you want to jump ship? Your current work is good, your photos are very marketable.. I'm just interested in your motivation ??

Yeah don't get me wrong.....i love my D200....its just the bloody noise issue primarily. Shooting over 400iso is to damn noisy. Again i seem to be adding "film like" noise to my images these days (software)....but i want to be able to do that if i want, NOT to cover up the fact that i have shot a band in a venue with next to no light and have chosen to make the photos look arty.....lol

GRAIN is GOOD - NOISE is NOT!

I also want to do Press stuff etc - Titto media had to knock me back not because of my ability but because of my camera. 5fps is TOO slow?

Dan PS: Thanks for the wrap/compliments Alpha_7 - i have along way to go to make something from this game.

Kyle sent me a few higher ISO crops from Nikon. I was amazed. I had heard they weren't all that flash (sorry about that) but was surprised that the ones he sent looked like what comes out of my mums D50.

I think what's a little telling is that price of a second hand 1DII is already sagging, and more so than we've seen in the past. It's people like Ronza who are going to be really weeping, as his 1DII just dropped $500 in value overnight from what I can see. I'm really hoping the same happens to the 1DsII in September, so I can get one of those for ~$5k or less.

Wishing, and hoping...

You have to admit that Canon are really on a winner here, I have just finished re-reading the white paper - for me the live view with 10x magnification for checking focus is a big bonus. It means at the telescope I would not have to carry the laptop - getting focus on a large telescope is really hard - there is no room for error, added to that the new lower noise especially in the shadows would help with my astronomy. Does this mean I am going to go out and get one - nope not yet, not until they have been tested to see if there are any bugs and that they live up to all the hype..I do not feel like being the first cab off the rank, however there is no other model at this point in time which tempts me like this or has that "I just want one factor" Would it improve my photography? I think the increased focus speed might increase the hit ratio, the frame rate is not so much of an issue because nothing beats anticipation and timing, although in those one of a lifetime shots it just might make a real difference. 14 bit, well yes that is nice. Most of all this thing would just feel nice and give that warm fuzzy feeling when using it..

Just found out I'll probably be receiving one of these cameras in early April!
Unfortunately I won't be able to keep it: it's destined for a custom modification for a U.S. customer. But I will get to use it for a week or so while I'm waiting for custom parts to be manufactured. I'm just afraid that it'll be an expensive experience!

Maybe I should charge admission to a demo session.

Gee, uh, I've been thinking about getting into the camera mod business, Dave. Could I maybe come and help you for a bit and get some idea of what's involved? I'll work without pay, for the experience, y'know. I'm free all of April :)
