hi, im new - first gig pics

i'm kinda new to these forums but have been lurking for a little bit.

shot my first gig the other week. would like some critiques and tips.

can someone give me some advice into how to get into shooting gigs and how to get press passes at gigs and music festivals. any help will be greatly appreciated.

bit of background info on this shoot.

snuck my camera into venue (the zoo) and shot in the mosh pit, one person back from the front of the stage. was really difficult with girls around me jumping around and bumping me, spilling beers. also got kicked in the head buy some crowd surfer. but i guess it was worth it. used a canon 1d and a 50mm 1.8

Firstly how exactly did you sneak a 1D into the zoo they aren't what you would call a small camera.

Secondly getting press passes you have to actually work for someone promoting a gig or be working for someone that is covering the gig that will be beneficial for the organizers to allow to photograph the gig. After this comes the forms you have to fill out photo passes and shit, recently I covered shihad and cog and thier pass only allowed for the first 3 songs of thier gig however cog didn't care.

then comes the copywrite you should know about this I would hope, with the passes or at least the ones im familiar with the images that you take are only good to be published once then after that they are the property of the promoters even though you took the image. Posting the images on your site probly wouldn't hurt but you never know with some people.

So with the obvious restriction put on you by getting a photo pass the people know you are there and know you can only take a limited amount of pics.......also getting a press pass/photo pass doesn't gaurentee you a good spot to shoot for the main band on a few occaisions the guys between the barrier have told me to scoot from out of there because they need to catch mics and people crowd surfing and all that crap.

Michael - thanks for the info. really helpful. i'm no pro so i don't know a lot about the whole copyright thing. i managed to sneak my cam in by going in with an empty bag and getting my bag searched at the door and then getting stamped. had a few drinks. went out and got my camera out of the car. went back with camera in bag. showed my stamp and walked straight through the door. voila.
