Re: Sydney NYE 2011/2012 Fireworks

Re: Sydney NYE 2011/2012 Fireworksanybody out there? I swear every year the responses get less and less for teh lead up to NYE but there are always plenty of people posting pictures afterwards...
people pay large sums of money to travel around teh world to see the fireworks in sydney, yet it seems we certainly take it for granted, that said I would not cry if they used the money for teh homeless instead gerry's photography journey

Re: Sydney NYE 2011/2012 FireworksMy family was maybe thinking of going to Blues Point Reserve for the show (if we can get down there early enough before they close off the area).

Re: Sydney NYE 2011/2012 Fireworks
Not really - it's been many years since I've braved one of the prime locations (e.g. Mrs Mac, Blues Point). Last time I did Blues Point we were there mid afternoon and got the most prime location but that was because we were getting lots of space for a few families with children, etc. I reckon if it's just a few individuals you can rock up much later - note that they close the roads up quite a way by 5 and 7PM so you'll have to walk in. I don't think my whole family is going so it may just be me and maybe my eldest so we may rock up later as well. D600, D7000, Nikon/Sigma/Tamron Lenses, Nikon Flashes, Sirui/Manfrotto/Benro Sticks

Re: Sydney NYE 2011/2012 FireworksI went down to Blues Point for a bit of a reccy just now. I've taken a few images with different focal lengths (12mm and some with the 70-300 (140 & 70mm) on crop) to give you a bit of a feel for the potential field of view from there...

Re: Sydney NYE 2011/2012 FireworksI really like that first one Gerry.
Re: Sydney NYE 2011/2012 FireworksFantastic shots as always, Gerry.
What were your settings? EOS 5D MkII, 70-200mm f/2.8LIS, 24-70mm f/2.8LIS, 50mm f/1.2, 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS, 580EX II
Re: Sydney NYE 2011/2012 FireworksThanks Gerry - here are a few of mine - I didn't get many keepers in mine but as it happens my favourite is not disimilar to your first as well.
We were both shooting in bulb mode so fixed aperture and ISO and shutter was basically for however long you held down the remote release for. During the 9AM fireworks where there wasn't much going on the bridge and just the stuff in the middle of the harbour I could do f/9 and 5 to 15 seconds. During the midnight ones however I started at f/5.6 and pretty short at 1 to 3 seconds (because it was so fast paced (many bursts at once)) - I moved to f/8 for a while and finally out to f/11 because it was getting so bright with so many bright bursts going off on the bridge (and some of the shots were as short as 1/4 sec and still blown out). We also took some time lapses as well (I havn't even looked at the three of mine to start processing yet - if any turns out half ok I'll upload and post it).
